UK Family 'Too Fat to Work'
By MIKE BRODY, MyFox NationalLOS ANGELES - A family of four in England say their weight prevents them from working and they need more government assistance, according to the Daily Telegraph .
Philip Chawner, 53, and his 57-year-old wife Audrey reportedly each weigh 336 pounds and their daughters Emma, 19, and Samantha, 21, weigh 238 pounds and 252 pounds, respectively.
The family receives approximately $31,553 a year in benefits. They claim to spend about $70 a week on groceries and consume 3,000 calories a day.
They say their weight is a hereditary condition. "All that healthy food, like fruit and veg, is too expensive. We're fat because it's in our genes. Our whole family is overweight," Audrey Chawner said.
A 2008 study by Yale's Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity suggests weight bias is as prevalent as racial discrimination.
